Temporary Resident Permit (TRP)

Canada is a country with much to offer. Canada opens its borders for people abroad to come to work, to visit their families, to attend for business, or simply to come as tourists to enjoy the sights.

You may find yourself in a situation where you need to come to Canada, but you are considered inadmissible. If you are deemed inadmissible or non-compliant, you still have options that will allow you to come to Canada – in other words, options that will allow you to overcome the inadmissibility or non-compliance.

What is a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP)?

The way to overcome inadmissibility to Canada is by obtaining a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP). A Temporary Resident Permit is a document that allows you to enter Canada and remain in Canada if you are considered inadmissible or non-compliant.

Inadmissibility and Non-Compliance

A Temporary Resident Permit is used to overcome an inadmissibility, and as a result, you will be permitted to enter Canada.

  • Inadmissibility: You may be considered inadmissible if you have past criminal convictions or suffer from a medical condition that would be considered a burden on Canada.
  • Non-Compliance: You may be considered non-compliant if you fail to comply with or satisfy the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and/or Regulation.

Temporary Resident Permit vs. Temporary Resident Visa

Keep in mind that a Temporary Resident Permit is not a Temporary Resident Visa.

  • A Temporary Resident Permit allows you to overcome your inadmissibility or non-compliance and enter Canada. A Temporary Resident Visa is a document that gives you legal status in Canada, for example, as a visitor, a student, or another temporary resident status of some type.

When Does the Temporary Resident Permit Expire?

Like other temporary resident documents, the Temporary Resident Permit has an expiration date that you need to pay attention to if you have obtained a Temporary Resident Permit. The expiry date will be noted on the Temporary Resident Permit. The Temporary Resident Permit is only valid until the expiry date stated on the Permit.
